Honest update: tariffs, shutdown, and next steps
8 months ago – Mon, Sep 29, 2025 at 05:49:38 PM

Dear friends,

Right now we are still in a holding pattern because of the tariffs. A U.S. appeals court recently ruled that most of the Trump-era tariffs were not legal, but it delayed that decision from taking effect until October 14, 2025 while the case goes to the Supreme Court. Until the Court rules, the tariffs are still in place and everything I need to ship remains stuck in this uncertainty.
On top of that, the government could shut down as soon as tomorrow if Congress cannot agree on a budget, which would add even more delays.
Here is what I want you to know:
  • Since the tariffs have destroyed 78 Tarot as we know it, I have had to pivot and throw myself into something new in order to keep moving forward.
  • I even attempted to work out a set tariff price with my printer, based on the uncertainty of whether tariffs would even remain at 30 percent, but I was unable to get an agreement. Costs remain unpredictable until the legal situation is resolved.
  • As you may know, I have two small children. They take up most of my days, but in the time I carve out I have been working hard to create a path forward.
  • The best solution I could come up with is raising money in the only way I know how that feels truly fair. I opened a print-on-demand shop with my art on mugs, shirts, and hoodies. Nothing is made until it is ordered, which means there is no waste, no storage costs, and it is better for the environment. This approach also ensures I never have to manufacture or store inventory again.
  • You can check it out here: www.littleshopofkindness.com.
  • Del, the AD and co-founder who I have worked closely with for a decade, has also had to pivot since 78 Tarot has stopped. If you want to support her new ventures, you can follow her Facebook for her sales.

She has such cute things, and of course I picked up a few for myself.

Most importantly, I want to thank you so much for hanging in there not just with me but with all the creators who have found themselves in this position. We appreciate every single bit of support you are giving us right now, and we will absolutely repay the kindness. I will update you again soon as I make progress and know more.

With gratitude,

Quick Update on the Progress we are Making
10 months ago – Tue, Aug 19, 2025 at 07:15:21 AM

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give you a quick update.

Right now tariffs are at 30% until at least November. That means I will need around $9,000 just to cover the customs fees to bring the decks into New York. This does not include production or shipping costs, which have already been handled.

I am also talking with our printer about the possibility of putting a contract in place that would cap my responsibility at the current 30% rate, even if tariffs go higher. At this point it is only a discussion, but I am doing everything I can to find some stability.

I have poured everything I have, time, energy, and money, into keeping 78 Tarot going, and I will continue to do so for as long as I am able. Summer is always slow for small businesses, but this one has been especially difficult for Etsy sellers like us.

I know delays are frustrating, and I truly appreciate your patience. This has been one of the hardest challenges I have faced, and it has taken a real toll. Anyone who knows me knows I always deliver, often even early, so this situation has been extremely tough for me.

I will continue to keep you updated, and I will share news as soon as I hear back from the printer.
Thank you again to everyone who has shown kindness and support. It means the world and truly keeps me moving forward.

With gratitude,
 Kayti

Just a quick update!
10 months ago – Sat, Jul 26, 2025 at 09:19:08 PM

I am sorry this is basically a cross post from our other campaign that we are trying to fulfill so forgive me if you see it twice I just want to be sure I’m updating regularly with full transparency 💕

First, I truly want to thank everyone again for their support, incredible kindness, and understanding. I can’t say enough how much it means not just to me, but to all creators navigating hard times right now.

I don’t have any new updates on the tariffs yet, but I’m continuing to work on ways to raise the funds we need.

Selling the inventory we currently have doesn’t leave us with anything extra. This is a passion project, which means we don’t profit. In a way, it’s like a non-profit. Everything we earn goes straight into fulfillment, storage, advertising, fees, and the various subscriptions we need just to keep things running. I want to be fully transparent about that. From the start, this has always been about the joy of making meaningful, beautiful art together.

Thank you for putting your trust and love in us. It means the world. I wish there were more ways to show how deeply grateful I am that you’re still here cheering for us. I’ll continue to share updates every few weeks and truly hope I have good news to report soon.

Working hard to get these decks to you!!!
11 months ago – Tue, Jul 15, 2025 at 04:49:46 PM

Hi everyone,

First off, thank you. Again. I know I repeat myself but I just need to reiterate. Your kindness and understanding during all of this has meant more to me than I can say. I have been doing absolutely everything I can to figure this out, even though it has honestly felt overwhelming at times.

When we launched this project, the tariff on our decks was around ten percent. That was expected and part of our normal cost. But it currently sits at roughly 54%. That kind of increase has been devastating for so many small creators like us, and we were not prepared for it. We never imagined this would happen.

That said, I am not giving up. I have applied for several loans to try and cover the extra fees. I am also looking into whether we can do partial shipments to get things moving. On top of that, I am seeing if there is any way to float the cost of using a fulfillment center directly in China so we might avoid some of the import fees.

I am managing this while also trying to fulfill another delayed project. Normally I have help from Trish, but she has been taking care of a very sick family member and has not been able to be online. So right now it is just me, doing my best to keep it all moving.

Because this is the very last of our 81-artist decks, I plan on making it as special as I possibly can. I want to end this chapter with heart and beauty. I hope it is worth the wait. I promise to keep the magic just as amazing as it has always been.

Thank you again for your support. It truly keeps me going. I will update again when I have more progress. Hopefully soon!!! I am very determined.

With love and gratitude,

Kayti
